History

Set in the picturesque Garden Village of Port Sunlight on the Wirral peninsula, this grade 2-listed art deco boutique hotel is the very essence of the Contessa genre – a finely tuned blend of classic and contemporary influences that have come together in a stunning hotel, that opened to critical acclaim following its restoration in 2008.

The building was originally opened in 1907 as a cottage hospital. It formed part of Lord Leverhulme’s philanthropic scheme for Port Sunlight, the pioneering estate designed to provide the very best social facilities for his workforce (and their families) at his neighbouring soap works. The village today is recognised as the finest example of its kind in the country.

Lord Leverhulme was the first industrialist to brand his products for mass consumption, thereby setting in train the foundations for modern-day marketing. He bought the rights to many of the paintings of his era and packaged his soap bars‘Sunlight Soap’ in reproductions of the pictures he owned.

The Hotel, along with the Lady Lever Art Gallery - noted for its fine Wedgewood and Pre-Raphaelites collections - and Port Sunlight Museum form the centrepiece of Port Sunlight Garden Village today. Together they form a delightful triumvirate of treasures to be savoured and digested. The hotel is the ideal base from which to explore the delights of this fascinating legacy that stemmed from one man’s unrivalled vision.

Understated luxury

Your comfort and enjoyment is of the utmost importance to us. With that in mind we have created nineteen stylish bedrooms, individually designed and furnished, that reflect the contemporary Art Deco raison d’être of the hotel - the mantra that courses through the veins of this endearing hotel.

Fifteen bedrooms are located in the main building and four in the Coach House. All the rooms are furnished to the same exacting high standards; handmade beds with sumptuous fabrics and bedlinen, the finest authentic art deco furniture, LCD TV with terrestrial, satellite and film channels, broadband internet access and wireless LAN capability throughout the building and grounds.

Bathrooms enjoy the finest quality Bvlgari products, and some even have 2-person Jacuzzi, separate shower and LCD TV, and are tastefully finished in the finest quality Spanish granite. For the ultimate in luxury, choose our suite with roof-top terrace and open-air hot tub looking out over the Garden Village.

The "Richard Fox at Leverhulme" Restaurant oozes charm and quiet sophistication in a modern, pristine, light and airy culinary setting that merges seamlessly with the elegant lines and contours of this lovely restored building from yesteryear.

The beauty of the architectural symmetry that envelops the dining experience is complemented by the art of the food, imaginatively prepared and presented by the Executive Chef and his team.

Whether you are dining at the hotel for business or pleasure, our simple cuisine with a modern twist which espouses lightness of touch and harmony of flavours, drawing upon locally-sourced seasonal ingredients, will entice you back time and time again to dine with us. Private dining rooms are also available.

Our mouth-watering menu is complemented by a wide choice of individually selected wines from our first class cellar.

Why not treat yourself to one of our traditional afternoon teas and relax in the comfortable surroundings of the hotel and its grounds.
