Rent an Elizabethan Manor House!
Set in the heart of East Devon, Cadhay is a beautiful Elizabethan Manor House built around a central courtyard with luxurious self catering accommodation for up to 22 people and magnificent gardens. Situated 10 miles east of Exeter and 5 miles from the sea at Sidmouth it is an ideal place for a relaxing holiday, a special occasion, anniversary celebration or a large family gathering. Alternatively you could use the house for a wedding party staying in the house with your guests. We have a license for civil weddings in the house and can arrange receptions in the garden.
The house has been occupied by the William-Powlett family since the 1920's and has recently been inherited by a furniture maker nephew, Rupert Thistlethwayte. He has restored it to its previous splendour whilst introducing modern comforts such as heating and additional bathrooms, as well as contemporary furniture of his own to complement the antique furniture.
Wedding Venue
So often, weddings are away from one’s home and are a perfect opportunity for gatherings with families and friends - something that sets Cadhay apart from many other properties is that here, as well as having a license for civil ceremonies, you have exclusive, residential use of the house and gardens for up to a week. With luxurious, self catering accommodation for 22 guests in the house and 12 in the newly converted Stables and Coach House, Cadhay is ideal if you are looking to create a house party atmosphere for your special occasion.
Typically, weddings take place between May and September, when the gardens are at their best, although small weddings may be possible at other times of the year.
Civil ceremonies for up to 40 people, can take place in any of three rooms in the house, or you may wish to be married elsewhere and enjoy Cadhay for your marquee reception, in which case numbers are unlimited. We also offer our Garden Room for your reception, which seats up to 60.
Cadhay is the place for those who like to make their own arrangements – it’s a bit like getting married at home, albeit an Elizabethan Manor! We will put you in touch with our approved suppliers of marquees and catering, who we know will provide an excellent service for all your requirements, but the rest is for you to create your dream day.
Accommodation
There are three reception rooms on the East side where you can gather in comfort and splendour. Adjoining these is the Georgian dining room which was created in 1739 by inserting a lower ceiling in the great hall. On the west side there is a large kitchen with Aga and electric ovens, where up to 10 can eat less formally.
On the first floor you may want to sleep in one of the three traditional four-poster beds or a more contemporary version. Alternatively you can sleep under the eaves in the newly refurbished attic rooms.
There is also a bedroom on the ground floor, with disabled bathroom facilities alongside. Central heating has been installed and there are also woodburning stoves in the reception rooms.
Gardens
Listed by Country Life magazine as one of the top manor houses in the country, Cadhay House also has gardens that are worth more than just a passing visit. The house is approached from the North down a lime tree avenue. On the East side it looks out over lawns with a ha-ha giving a seamless view over parkland - a very popular venue for wedding receptions
