Cliveden House

Sir George Warrender, bon viveur and property heir, commissioned the rebuilding of Cliveden following the first disastrous fire in 1795. With Sir George as host, Cliveden soon regained the splendour of its earlier days and he also established the tone of relaxed hospitality for which it is known today. Sir George is quoted as saying, “My rule is to say to my friends we breakfast at 10 and dine at 7 and all the rest of the time you do as you please”.

Marriage at Cliveden

Cliveden was one of the first hotels to be granted a licence to hold wedding ceremonies within selected rooms within the house. The ultimate wedding venue, Cliveden is Britain’s highest rated five red star hotel and is also known as one of the foremost hotels in the world. A wonderful location, ideally situated for both Heathrow and Gatwick airports combined with excellent service, hospitality and food, carries on the traditions of over three centuries. Described as one of the great country houses of England, Cliveden was built by the second Duke of Buckingham in 1666 and is set in 376 acres of beautiful parkland. The staff provides a very personal, yet professional service ensuring your every need is catered for, which then enables you to leave with memories that last a lifetime.

Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnerships

Cliveden provides a truly idyllic setting for a wedding ceremony. Our range of beautiful rooms, stunning location and views over the River Thames allows for the perfect wedding ceremony that caters for your every need.

For ceremonies of up to 12 guests, we have our secluded Spring Cottage on the banks of the River Thames, with its beautiful riverside gardens and beautiful architecture and airy windows.

For ceremonies of up to 60 guests, there is a choice of rooms - our romantic Lady Astor Suite, Stone Gazebo, Library or Mountbatten Suite. For up to 120 guests there is the Churchill, French Dining Room, and Terrace Dining Room which all provide perfect locations for your special day.

Alternatively, if your party exceeds 120 guests, we can accommodate your wedding ceremony on an exclusive use basis of the entire House. Taking exclusive use of the House creates a unique occasion of ultimate privacy and unrivalled flexibility, with our staff on hand to discretely arrange everything you need.

Wedding Breakfast

From May 1999 Spring Cottage became available for small wedding parties of up to 12 guests. Spring Cottage is a favourite, with its quiet riverside location offering another unique wedding venue on the Cliveden Estate.

Alternatively, any of our private dining rooms can be used for your wedding reception. The Boudoir, Lady Astor’s private drawing room holds up to 20 guests and has stunning views over the lawn and Parterre. Next door, Lord Astor’s private drawing room, The Tote Room, can also be used for reception drinks. The Rococo splendour of the French Dining Room is one of the most romantic and impressive settings for a wedding breakfast in the country. The Terrace Dining Room is a stunning south-facing dining room which is bathed in sunlight and looks out over the Parterre gardens and River Thames. Its classical elegance and fine works of art give it that enviable touch of romance, which Cliveden is famous for. With its three impressive chandeliers, and six sets of French windows it is hard to imagine a grander setting for your wedding breakfast.

Wedding Menus

Cliveden has a long tradition of fine food and warm hospitality. George Bernard Shaw enjoyed many a fine meal here as a guest of Lord and Lady Astor and would be equally enamoured by the first class cuisine offered at Cliveden today.

Honeymoons

Cliveden is a popular choice for newlyweds with its romantic history and luxurious surroundings, and many couples stay for a night or two before jetting off from Heathrow (only twenty minutes drive away). It was built out of love by the Duke of Buckingham for his mistress, and has been the site of passionate duels and tempestuous love affairs over the centuries, it was once even given as a wedding gift.

Wherever you stay in the House or the seclusion of Spring Cottage by the River Thames, you’ll be assured a perfect blessing to the start of your marriage. After 6pm only House guests are allowed into the grounds, where you can explore the Fountain of Love, the Secret Garden or any other romantic hideaways at your leisure.
