Description of Gwydir Castle

Gwydir Castle is situated in the beautiful Conwy Valley and is set within a Grade 1 listed, 10-acre garden. Built by the illustrious Wynn family c1500, Gwydir is a fine example of a Tudor courtyard house, incorporating re-used medieval material from the dissolved Abbey of Maenan. Further additions date from c1600 and c1826. The important 1640s panelled Dining Room has now been reinstated, following its repatriation from the New York Metropolitan Museum.

The Castle is an approved premises for Civil Marriages and our two early Tudor ground-floor halls are available for your ceremony and reception. This naturally includes the open log fires and candles that one might expect in such a romantic and atmospheric context. The important ten acre gardens are also available for your use and are included in the package.

Catering: To ensure quality of service we have contracted our own caterer who would be happy to provide you with an outline of menus and menu prices on request, as well as accommodating any special catering requirements you may have.

B&B

Gwydir Castle is a Grade 1 listed early Tudor courtyard house, set in ten acres of important historic gardens and located in the centre of the enchanting Conwy Valley. The ancestral seat of the illustrious Wynn family, Gwydir was the home, in the Elizabethan period, of Katherine Tudor, 'Mam Cymru', the 'Mother of Wales' and cousin of Queen Elizabeth I. Amongst the many notable guests who have stayed at Gwydir are King Charles I, Lord Leicester (Queen Elizabeth's favourite) and more recently King George V and Queen Mary.

The castle is primarily a family home, though Guests are warmly welcomed to share in Gwydir's tranquil and timeless atmosphere and languish by a log fire in one of the candle-lit halls. The castle is renowned for its peacocks and for its ghosts (though neither the former nor the latter inhabit the guest's rooms). Situated in the foot-hills of Snowdon, three miles from Betws-y-Coed and twelve miles from the medieval walled town of Conwy, Gwydir is perfectly situated for the enjoyment of all the natural and historic wonders of North Wales.
