Shahnaz is no ordinary Indian restaurant – this place has style, substance and a huge dose of wow factor. You’ll find Shahnaz at the bottom of Cheddar Gorge, occupying a commanding corner position, but after one visit you’ll wish it was at the end of your street. The beautifully lit-up exterior tempts diners inside to a warm bar and lounge, with an illuminated staircase leading up to the dining area, which boasts modern decor and room for 160 covers. Salim and his brother Hashim expertly run Shahnaz. The family have been in the restaurant business since 1985 and the service they provide is first class. The menu features many specialities from their hometown in Bangladesh, and the tropical fish and vegetarian options are particularly superb. All the dishes are cooked with natural ingredients and no additives are used. We let Salim guide us in our choices – his knowledge and passion were very impressive. First the poppadoms arrived with freshly made dips, followed by starters of sesame chicken and crabcake. Mains comprised murgh nawabi – chicken breast stuffed with minced lamb, cooked in a creamy sauce – and Malaya chicken tikka, bursting with pineapple and almond flavours.
