Wedding Planner FAQs

The role of a wedding planner is to help coordinate and organise your wedding, making the planning process as easy as possible and the day run smoothly. If you like the idea of having a wedding planner, be sure to add this element to your wedding budget as soon as possible.

To start your search for the perfect wedding planner, begin by taking a good look through the websites and Instagram accounts of the wedding planners in your area. It’s really important that you like their aesthetic, because as much as they make your vision come to life, you’re paying for their creative eye too.

Speak to a few wedding planners - many do video consultations - to see which you gel with most. For the whole process to run smoothly, you need to ensure you form a good relationship with your wedding planner and that you feel comfortable communicating your likes and dislikes. In order to make your wedding day wishes come true, you both need to be honest with each other, especially about what’s achievable with your budget.

Once you’ve found the right wedding planner for you, it’s time for the fun part! You can hire a wedding planner for all your planning or just part of it; for example, you may just want a tailor-made venue and supplier finding service or you might want someone leading the way until the last dance.

What Does a Wedding Planner Do?

A wedding planner will help you with everything from suggesting suppliers, running on-the-day logistics and negotiating contracts.

Most couples work with their wedding planner from the very beginning of the process, but it’s also common to hire one a little later into planning if you’re finding it overwhelming. A wedding planner will be able to eliminate a lot of the stresses and communication that you may not be able to cope with if you have a busy day job or you just don’t have time to plan your perfect day.

How Much Does a Wedding Planner Cost in the UK?

Many wedding planners work on a percentage fee of your overall wedding budget, which is often 10% to 15% of your total budget for a full planning service. For partial planning, there is likely to be a minimum fee instead. This means that there is no average cost - it really depends on your budget.

If you are marrying at a venue far away from your home, you may want to find a planner local to your venue. Otherwise, you’ll need to factor in transport costs for your planner too as they’ll need to do several site visits and more.

Frequently asked questions regarding Planners

Should I hire a wedding planner?

Whether or not you hire a wedding planner is entirely up to your personal choice, the size and scope of your wedding, and the location of your wedding. If you are having a destination wedding, a wedding planner could be a life saver, helping you navigate local suppliers and even cultural aspects.

How much time do you need to plan a wedding?

It is recommended that you start planning your wedding a year in advance, especially if you are planning a large wedding or a wedding abroad. Destination weddings mean guests will probably need to book flights and accommodation, as well as request holidays in advance. If you are planning a small, local wedding, on the other hand, then you have a little more flexibility and can probably start your planning 6 to 10 months in advance. Nonetheless, it's always a good idea to give guests enough time to save your date and look for venues and other suppliers well in advance to ensure you get your first choice.

When should I hire my wedding planner?

You should aim to book your wedding planner 10 to 12 months in advance. If you're looking for a complete wedding planning service, the sooner you book your planner the sooner you'll be able to glide through your wedding planning tasks and stay on track.

What does a wedding planner do?

A wedding planner can typically take charge of all your planning needs, from hiring and negotiating with suppliers to ensuring your day runs in a smooth and timely manner.
