Decorations can become really complicated and require a large budget of you don't plan properly. Here are some considerations and money saving ideas to keep it all balanced.

Almost anything can be sourced cheaper on the internet or put together at home to save money. First you need to think about the place you wedding reception will be held, then what your colour scheme is, and then what your budget is and what you have the time and patience to do yourself. Here are some possibilities.

Flowers: Flower companies make their money by dressing up standard flowers to look nice, and so can you. Order in flowers, ribbon, vases, glass beads, stones or whatever else you need from the internet and pull it all together yourself. Better still, delegate the task to a family member or close friend as their wedding present to you!

Table decorations: Start with a pure white setting, so that means white tablecloths and white chair covers. If the venue allow it, you could search for cheaper hire options and install them yourselves, this also goes for the hire of tableware. Then, choose a simple colour scheme, perhaps 2-3 colours, and buy reams of tulle, wide ribbon and tie big bows around the chairs, decorate vases, trim doors. Use the same ribbon but smaller to make places mats, cardholders and central displays. Make the centrepieces and cardholders double up as favours the guests can take away and keep.

Candles: Evocative, romantic and economical. Use tea lights in large bowls filled with white stones or glass beads. Different heights of candles can be used to nice effect, scented and coloured candles that go with the colour scheme or LED lights to light the way to your first dance.

Personal touch: Photographs make an inexpensive and unique touch. Find photos of the couple before getting married and enlarge, make them into cardholders, place mats, favours and menus.
