We all want to look fantastic on our wedding day. We hunt for the perfect dress we go to the best beauty salons...But it's not enough to look after ourselves in the weeks leading up to the big day, especially where our hair is involved.

The arrival of autumn spells a significant loss of hair for most people. The stress that our hair undergoes in the summer from heat, chlorine in swimming pools and exposure to UV rays, causes the growth cycle of new hair to speed up and shed old hair. If this is what you experience, it is temporary alopecia which is no cause for anxiety and which will take care of itself.

A good diet can help us prevent hair loss and improve our health. Any nutritional deficit can trigger hair loss, but we should pay special attention to vitamins A, B and C, iron, copper, zinc, biotin and folic acid.

  • Vitamins A, B and C: liver and organs in general, dairy products, rice, wheat, oranges, apples, carrots, kiwi, oats and grapefruit etc.
  • Iron: is very important since it helps to maintain healthy hair follicles. Some foods which contain iron are: lentils, chickpeas, spinach, oysters, clams and celery etc.
  • Copper: copper acts as an antioxidant and helps to prevent hair loss. It can be found in walnuts, hazelnuts, cocoa, mushrooms, soya and vegetables etc.
  • Zinc: some sources of zinc are asparagus, eggplant, chickpeas, banana, figs or wheat germ.
  • Biotin: biotin is paramount for healthy hair, skin and nails and can be found in dairy products, strawberries, brewer's yeast, liver, etc.
  • Folic Acid: orange juice, asparagus, broccoli, beetroot, avocado etc.

Hair has its own lifecycle and it is normal for it to fall out to give way for new hair, but if you notice that it is more marked than normal, visit a dermatologist.
