History of the Bouquet
The bouquet is the quintessential wedding item. But do you know why and what its history is? Read on to find out...

Throughout history, flowers have been important to many types of special occasion, and none more than weddings. The type of flower or plant used conveys a message, and this is also true for the flowers in the bridal bouquet.
- In ancient times, the bouquet was made up of aromatic herbs like thyme and garlic to ward off any evil spirits that might affect the couples future happiness.
- Sometimes flowers would also be tied up with the herbs, which the couple would eat or drink to make use of some of the aphrodisiac properties.
- Over time, herbs became substituted for flowers, most of all orange or lemon blossom. The delicious scent perfumed the bride.
- After the ceremony, the custom was to offer the bouquet to the Gods in return for protecting the couple and giving them many children.
- The bouquet was also used to convey a silent message from bride to groom, until they could be alone together.
- No-one knows the exact origin of the custom of tossing the bouquet to single female guests, but today many brides simply choose someone to give the bouquet to.
