How to Pick a Colour Scheme for Your Wedding

Whether it's girly pinks or rock chic black and purple, a colour scheme will be central to your wedding decoration and must be decided early on. Not sure how? Read on...

The colour scheme you choose will affect everything about your wedding from the invites to your dress and accessories, flowers, the wedding party clothes and of course the decorations, centrepieces, favours at the reception... with all that hanging on it, it's important to get it right!

  • Make a mood board. Mood boards are invaluable when planning the décor of your wedding. You can collect a load of wedding magazines and get snipping, including colours or idea that you like.
  • As you go along make an inventory of the colours that call you and match the them you are thinking of. For example, tropical theme has to include pink, orange and perhaps red, a beach theme might have blue, yellow and white, a Halloween theme will warrant black and orange.
  • Certain themes can have various colour schemes, so go towards that which pulls you. For example a vintage wedding could be composed of cream, baby pink, grey and baby blue, or it could equally be white, apple red and petrol blue.

  • Think about your venue, use surrounding references to guide you, are you in eh country, city, island, beach, country mansion, castle...
  • Use personal references like ethnic background or cultural reference, or favourite colours, or even colours associated with a sport or activity you do alone or together.
  • Pick colours that suit you. Remember you or your partner will likely be wearing them so it's no use picking colours that you know do you no favours! Complement what you already have.
  • In the same way, you might like to think about the bridesmaids or other people who will have to wear your colour scheme. Will they look nice? Will they feel good?

At the end of the day the most important thing is that you choose the colours that attract you and make you feel happy, after all its your big day, so if you want purple and orange, or lime green and brown, just go for it!
